Sweet Sixteen Months

Claire is 16 months old today.  She marked the day with a very crabby afternoon, but it's just a typical day in the life of a 16 month old.  It's tough to be 16 months old.  Claire is stuck between baby and toddler.  She really, really wants to be big, but her body and mind just won't let her make the leap quite yet.  Sometimes when she's breaking down in frustration, we are hopeful for that leap to be made soon.  Other times, when she's cuddly and drinking from her sippy cup like it's her bottle, we are happy to enjoy the little bit of baby that is left in her.

Today marks the start of a big transition for Claire.  She's now legally able to hang out with the toddlers in the toddler room at school, and will begin that transition so she's ready to make the full move at 17 months.  It is going to be an adventure as she continues to move away from baby and forward toward full time toddler.

As we are all making this transition we are enjoying the fun that comes along with it.  Here are some fun facts about Claire:

  • Claire is the class clown.  Her teachers often comment on how she is a very silly girl and puts in quite an effort to get a laugh out of everyone.  She has a great sense of humor already.
  • Claire is still the queen of hair.  It drives her crazy in the morning until we get it pulled out of her face.  From watching Anna get her hair combed one night, she learned that anytime someone touches or brushes her hair, no matter what, she says, "Ow! Ow! Ow!"  We are blessed with girls with beautiful hair; here come more braids!
  • Verbal vocabulary is growing:  mama, dada, Anna, ow, woah, more, on.  Often you can figure out what she's talking about based on her level of whining and pointing.  She's determined to communicate.
  • Claire understands much of what you tell her.  You can give her simple directions, and she's on top of them instantly.  She can get things from the baskets, put things away, find her shoes.  She's a pro.
  • Claire is our climber!  I'm sure I have mentioned it before, but Sister can climb up anything!  She climbs onto stools and uses them to get to the counter top.  She climbs the stairs, up and down.  She's fast and she's brave.
  • Claire loves to dance.  She loves to pump her fists in the air whenever she hears a beat that she likes.
  • High-fives and fist bumps are her favorite.
  • Claire wants to do anything Anna can do.  She colors, plays play-dough, blows bubbles, helps set the table, picks up toys, makes messes, picks out her clothes, she wants to be big.
  • Claire is a girly girl at times.  She loves to try on clothes and play with the dress up clothes.  She loves to wear her backpack around the house and put on bracelets.  Shoes are her favorite accessory; she loves to take shoes off and put on different ones frequently.
  • Claire can identify what belongs to whom.  She delivers shoes to the rightful owners every morning.
  • Claire's current favorite game is peek-a-boo.  She loves to hide her face with her hands and have you "look" for her by calling for her until she decides to "come out."
  • Sister is getting a bit ornery. You know she's up to no good when she gets the look in her eye.  From time to time, when you ask her to go one way, she will very adamantly take off going the other way.
  • Sweet tooth Claire.  Girl loves her chocolates and sweets.  She doesn't get many, but she knows when there is a brownie or cookie around and she'll be right there to help you take care of it.
  • Sweet little Claire.  She loves to cuddle, loves to give hugs, loves to be close to her mommy and daddy.  She's a loving, caring, sweet little girl.  We all love having her silly antics around, especially at supper, showing us her food and making us laugh.  She's developing into a wonderful little girl who will soon show no signs of being a baby anymore.  We're going to hold on to these days carefully, enjoying them all....especially when we're caught in the midst of a toddler/baby breakdown; it's all part of the learning for her and soon she'll be communicating and telling us exactly what she wants.  :)
We are very lucky to have two wonderful little girls.  Happy sweet 16 months Claire.
